True Delta BackupTM: the art of omission
Your data does not change a 100% each day. So, why write a 100% data to a backup tape on a daily basis then? Well, in case something goes wrong, you do want to restore a 100% of your data. With IASO True Delta BackupTM we make this happen, only differently.
Advanced delta technique
With IASO, each backup is a so-called delta backup, in which delta equals change. In relation to the previous backup session, IASO IP Backup is extremely smart and effective in finding the changes in a data set. Experience shows that, on average, these changes do not sum up to more than 0,1 % to 0,5 % of the protected data set. This does not only include changes on file level (new and changed files, the so-called “incremental backup”). IASO True Delta backup is so much more. Our technology searches the exact changes in the changed files and processes only the changes that are really new, i.e. on “block level”.
Full Restore
Though each backup is a delta backup in the IASO IP Backup process, a full backup of every single backup session is available in case of a restore. As the data of the backup are stored on a disk, they are always directly and on-line available. Another advantage of the smart IASO IP Backup software shows in the on-the-fly combination of the available delta restores during restore. The system manager, or even the user, does not notice this process, as it is completely transparent.
Effective in bandwidth and storage capacity
So, the spectacular data reduction of 99,5 % – 99,9 % is the result of the IASO True Delta BackupTM technology. The advantage of such a large reduction of the backup volume is the possibility to transport relatively large datasets over limited IP bandwidth to the backup storage device within an acceptable time frame (backup window).
The efficiency of True Delta BackupTM also leads to a big advantage on the backup storage device. By using standard data compression on to the first backup – the delta is a 100%, all data are new – initially only 60% – 70% of the protected data volume is stored on the remote data storage. Needless to say that, with a delta of 0,01% – 0,2%, an enormous amount of backups can be stored using only a fragment of the storage capacity.
